Your Unused Perfume Is Fading: Turn It Into Money Instead
A perfume left on the shelf doesn't get better with age: light, heat and air dull its scent. If you're not wearing it, sell it while it still smells right – with your own shelf at Qué Retro in Los Cristianos, Tenerife.
We all have one. The perfume someone gave us that never quite felt right, the one we bought on impulse, or the one we wore twice and left in the bathroom by the window "for a special occasion".
The thing is, perfume isn't wine: it doesn't improve with age. While it waits on the shelf, it slowly loses what made it special. And every month that passes, it's worth a little less.
In short
An opened perfume usually keeps well for a few years; light, heat and air make it lose its scent faster.
The top notes – the freshest, lightest part – are the first to go.
The sooner you sell, the better it smells and the better price you can ask.
At Qué Retro you set your own selling price and choose between plans with rental fees or a higher commission with no rent.
Why perfume loses its scent on the shelf
Perfume is a delicate blend of aromatic oils and alcohol. Three things damage it more than anything else:
Light. Sunlight and strong light break down the aromatic molecules. A pretty bottle on display on the dresser or by a window suffers far more than one kept in its box.
Heat. High temperatures and sudden changes speed up evaporation and oxidation. In the Canary Islands, a bathroom or sunny bedroom can get quite warm, especially in summer.
Air. Every time you open the bottle, oxygen gets in. The emptier the bottle, the more air inside and the faster the scent changes.
The top notes go first: that fresh, citrusy or floral first hit you fell for in the shop. After that, the perfume can turn flatter, sharper or simply different. If it has changed colour or smells of alcohol or metal, it has already started to turn.
A perfume on the shelf is money on the shelf
A bottle you don't use does nothing for you, but a bottle in good condition is worth something to someone else. Plenty of buyers look for designer perfume at a fairer price, or for a fragrance that's no longer made.
Timing is everything: a perfume that still smells like day one sells faster and for more than one that's spent years in the sun. Waiting doesn't add value – it only fades it.
A fragrance you no longer wear could be someone else's favourite
Perhaps it was a gift that never quite suited you, or a scent you loved before your tastes changed. That doesn't mean it has to stay at the back of a cupboard. For someone who already knows and loves it, your unused bottle could be a welcome find.
When preparing a perfume for sale, think about what you would want to know as a buyer: the exact fragrance, how much is left and how the bottle has been kept. Bring the original box if you have it, check that the sprayer works and be open about its condition. A fair price should reflect the bottle you are selling, including the amount remaining.
